I am pleased to share BCP Blitz’ Seed Round investment in Aquaprawnics.
Aquaprawnics is a next-generation agriculture tech company that uses advanced aquaculture to transform seafood production. Today’s seafood industry is laden with contaminants, carbon, bad labor practices and bycatch, otherwise known as the destruction of ocean ecosystems and aquatic species while fishing. (We recommend watching Seaspiracy on Netflix). AquaPrawnics solves these issues with vertical land-based indoor seafood farms – think hydroponic farms for seafood.
Today Aquaprawnics produces shrimp, the most widely consumed seafood in America. Shrimp is a $32 billion industry, the size of the salmon and tuna industries combined. Their small-scale indoor farms produce some of the world’s cleanest, healthiest and most sustainable shrimp in the world with some of the lowest mortality rates. Because farms are small-scale and planned as a “hub and spoke” model, the shrimp makes it to your plate with local distribution and a low carbon footprint. Retailers, distributors and consumers are growing their consciousness around sustainability and health. As such, Aquaprawnics has strong early traction with significant demand as production ramps up.
Aquaculture is a technology we understand well from our partner Jarl Ulvin’s prior experience across the salmon industry in Norway. (Jarl previously had $1B invested across related businesses). I originally joined Aquaprawnics as a non-executive Board Member, and as BCP Blitz formed, we decided to invest in Aquaprawnics given how impressed we were with the science, founding scientists behind the business and market dynamics.
BCP Blitz invests across food tech, ag tech, climate tech and wellness to advance a Smart Society that is sustainable and healthy. We have a big thesis around applying cutting-edge technologies, like aquaculture, to make the things we consume cleaner and more sustainable. Our investment in Aquaprawnics falls in our ag tech vertical, but also delivers ancillary positive impact across our food supply and carbon footprint. With a large market, demonstrable early traction and incredible scientific innovation from a great team, we are incredibly excited to transform seafood production with AquaPrawnics.
